Southport's identity is shaped by the Broadwater, and much of daily life revolves around it — walking and cycling the foreshore, launching a boat, or watching the sunset over the water towards The Spit. Southport is well served by the G:link light rail, with several stops through the CBD connecting residents south to Broadbeach and Robina, and north towards Helensvale and the M1. This, combined with bus routes and the Smith Street Motorway providing car access to the Pacific Motorway, makes Southport one of the better-connected suburbs on the Gold Coast for commuters. Gold Coast University Hospital and the Griffith University campus are also within the suburb, adding to local traffic generated by students and health workers rather than through-traffic alone.

Southport has an unusually deep list of schooling options for a single suburb. The Southport School (TSS) and St Hilda's School are two of the Gold Coast's most established independent schools, drawing families from across the region.
