About Main Beach
Welcome to Main Beach
Main Beach occupies the narrow, glamorous strip of land at the northern end of the Gold Coast tourist run, where the Nerang River meets the Pacific just before it opens into the Southport Broadwater. It sits between Surfers Paradise and The Spit, giving it one of the more enviable positions on the coast — ocean on one side, calm waterways on the other, and the Marina Mirage precinct and Anchorage marina close at hand.
Quieter and more low-key than its high-rise neighbour Surfers Paradise, Main Beach has built a reputation as a refined, walkable pocket favoured by downsizers, retirees and professionals who want beach access without the nightclub strip. With a population of just under 4,000 and a median age of 57, it's a suburb geared toward comfortable, low-maintenance coastal living rather than share-house density or family sprawl.
Lifestyle & dining
Tedder Avenue is the social heart of the suburb, a compact strip of cafes, restaurants and bars that has long punched above its weight for a street of its size. It's the kind of place where a Sunday session can run from breakfast through to evening drinks without needing to move more than a few doors down. The adjoining Marina Mirage adds boutique shopping and waterfront dining with views across to Sea World and the Broadwater, while the beach itself — patrolled, wide and far less crowded than Surfers — is a drawcard for early walkers and swimmers.
Shopping
Beyond the Tedder Avenue strip and Marina Mirage, residents lean on nearby Surfers Paradise and Southport for bigger shopping needs, including major supermarkets and the Australia Fair and Southport Central retail precincts. Chevron Island, just across the water, adds another small dining and grocery hub within easy reach.
Getting around
Main Beach's slender, linear layout makes it highly walkable, with the beach, marina and main street all close together. The G:link light rail, with a stop nearby, connects residents south through Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach and north to Southport and the Gold Coast University Hospital precinct, while regular buses cover The Spit and Southport. Frequent traffic on the Gold Coast Highway is really the only downside of a location this central.
Parks & recreation
The Spit and its surrounding parkland are on the doorstep, offering fishing spots, walking and cycling paths, and views over the Seaway to South Stradbroke Island. Budds Beach and the Southport Broadwater Parklands are also within easy reach for kayaking, picnics and skate facilities, while the marina precinct supports boating and fishing lifestyles that are hard to match elsewhere on the coast.
Housing & architecture
Main Beach's housing stock is overwhelmingly vertical: current listings run 91% apartments and units, with townhouses at 7% and standalone houses a rare 3%. Buildings range from older low-rise beachside blocks to newer high-rise towers with water views over the Broadwater or ocean, reflecting the suburb's tight geography and its appeal to owners chasing lock-up-and-leave convenience over garden space.
The property market
The median unit and apartment price in Main Beach sits at $1.45 million, underlining its position as one of the more premium pockets of the northern Gold Coast, priced above many of its neighbours including parts of Southport and Surfers Paradise. Given apartments and units make up the vast majority of the market here, buyer interest tends to centre on aspect and outlook — Broadwater views, marina glimpses or ocean frontage — as the main drivers of value, with Paradise Waters' canal-front houses offering a contrasting, low-density alternative just over the bridge for those wanting more land.
