Life in Sorrento revolves around the water. Being surrounded by Broadbeach Waters, Isle of Capri and Bundall also means Sorrento sits close to the Gold Coast's main arterial routes without carrying through-traffic itself.

The suburb's defining recreational asset is the water itself, with canal frontage supporting boating and kayaking straight from home. Nearby, the parklands and riverside paths around Bundall and the Nerang River offer walking and cycling routes, while Broadbeach's patrolled ocean beach is only a few minutes away for swimming and surf lifesaving club activities.

Sorrento's housing stock is overwhelmingly geared toward houses, which make up 98% of current listings, with land sites accounting for the remaining 3% — a reflection of the suburb's large canal-front blocks and low-density character.
