In 1887, during the boom years of "Marvellous Melbourne," celebrated hotelier William C. Wilson commissioned this grand mansion, naming it Lanark. Electricity was still seven years from reaching the Melbourne streets, this home was lit by candlelight, while the stables at the rear kept the horses that carried the household through the city. The house went on to house some of Melbourne's most prominent figures over the following decades. Around 1939 it took on a new identity as Grosvenor, and operated as a luxury reception venue.
