About this property

Standing proud on impressive park-like grounds, this iconic heritage-listed estate, known as 'Innisfallen Castle', is the namesake of Castle Cove and one of only five castellated mansions in the inner Sydney ring. Engulfed in rich history, Castle Cove was originally referred to as "Middle Harbour" or "Little Sugar Loaf Peninsula" until 1920 when Walter Burley Griffin named the area Castlecove (one word) due to the prominence of Innisfallen Castle and it wasn't until 1987 that the Geographical Names Board renamed the area again in honour of the castle, Castle Cove (two words). Commissioned in 1902 by a prominent member of the Parliament of New South Wales, Hon. Henry Willis, Innisfallen Castle, was designed in English Gothic perpendicular style and named after a ruined abbey at Killarney, Ireland. The castle was originally part of a 52 acre estate but after Henry Wills' death the land was gradually sold off until there was 8,333sqm remaining. In April 1999 Innesfallen castle was added to the NSW State Heritage Register ensuring preservation of its beauty, history and the grounds it stands on. The castle was constructed from sandstone quarried on site and features a crenellated tower on the northern side, three-stories high with a separate staircase used for maid quarters at the time. Each corner is graced by a solid stone circular turret and the exterior walls are two feet thick. The interior joinery is of cedar with seven foot doorways and ceilings 14 feet high. The decoration has a strong Federation theme with many Australian wildflowers depicted in the plaster and stained glass. With only two owners in 120 years, an extraordinary opportunity exists to own and expand on a remarkable piece of Australian history, adding substantial modern amenities. The heritage residence comes complete with DA-approved plans by renowned architects Fender Katsalidis envisioning an impressive addition featuring four additional bedrooms, a 20-metre swimming pool, gym, cinema room, wine cellar, sauna, spa, and extra storage, transforming the property into a luxurious 12-bedroom, 7-bathroom mansion. The estate boasts a championship sized tennis court with night lighting while magical park-like gardens surround the grand residence. - Grand entrance featuring stunning leadlight windows - Soaring ornate ceilings, timber flooring and elegant marble fireplaces - Formal and casual living and dining areas complemented by a galley-style kitchen - Expansive Middle Harbour views, oversized bedrooms, and sunlit bathroom - Separate, self-contained guest wing with three bedrooms and a bathroom - Tennis court, sprawling gardens and ample off-street parking - DA-approved plans for an additional 4-bedroom residence with guest wing - DA approval includes a cinema, 20-meter pool, gym and wine cellar - Conveniently located 11km from the Sydney CBD
