For bigger shopping trips, residents typically head inland to Maclean or Grafton, both within easy reach for major retailers and bulkier errands.

Getting around

Yamba is reached via a turn-off from the Pacific Highway, with Maclean and Grafton the nearest links to the highway and rail services further inland. There's no train line directly into town, so most locals rely on cars, and the walk-or-drive-everywhere layout of the town itself is part of its appeal. The Clarence River ferry and local roads also connect Yamba to Iluka and the river islands, useful for those who split time between the two sides of the mouth.

Yamba Public School serves local families, and the town's slower pace, safe beaches and close-knit community make it popular with younger families as well as retirees. Older students generally travel to Maclean or Grafton for high school, which is factored into daily life for many households here.
