Toogoom is car-dependent, and most residents rely on their own vehicle for work, school runs and shopping trips. The drive into central Hervey Bay takes in the order of 30 minutes, connecting to the Bruce Highway for those travelling further afield to Maryborough or south towards Brisbane. There's no rail line through Toogoom itself, so access to broader public transport networks means travelling into Hervey Bay or Maryborough first.

Toogoom itself doesn't have its own primary or secondary school, so local families typically send children to schools in Burrum Heads or the wider Hervey Bay area, where there's a good spread of state and independent options. Given the median age of 52, the suburb's family cohort is smaller than in typical growth suburbs, and Toogoom tends to attract older families, grandparents and retirees more than those with very young children, though its quiet streets and beach access still make it workable for family living.
