Life in Point Lookout revolves around the coastline. Main Beach, Cylinder Beach, Frenchmans and Home Beach each have their own character, from sheltered family swimming spots to the more exposed breaks favoured by surfers, and the North Gorge Headland Walk remains one of the best free things to do in South East Queensland, with a fair chance of spotting dolphins, turtles and, in season, migrating whales.

The village centre is compact but does the job, with a handful of cafes, pubs and casual restaurants that lean into the fresh seafood and relaxed island-holiday feel. It's not a dining destination in the way inner-Brisbane suburbs are, but that's part of the appeal for people who move here.

Getting around

There's no bridge to North Stradbroke Island, so getting to Point Lookout means a vehicle or passenger barge from Cleveland, or a faster water taxi service, followed by a drive or bus trip up the island's single main road. Once you're there, the village itself is small enough to walk or cycle around, though most residents keep a car or rely on the local bus service for the trip out to Dunwich and back to the mainland ferries.

This two-step commute is the trade-off for the setting, and it shapes who lives here permanently versus who treats it as a weekender — something worth factoring in for buyers weighing up lifestyle against convenience.

The property market

Point Lookout's property market is small, tightly held and firmly lifestyle-driven. The median house price currently sits at $1.90 million, and prices have moved sharply, up 54.9% over the recent growth period, reflecting strong demand for a limited pool of island homes.

Current listings show houses make up 61% of the mix, with land making up 21% and apartments or units the remaining 18% — so there's a reasonable spread of options for buyers set on a house versus those considering a coastal apartment or a vacant block to build their own escape. Given the population is so small, even modest shifts in buyer interest can move the market noticeably, and stock tends to be limited at any given time.

Parks & recreation

Much of the appeal here is the surrounding natural environment rather than manicured parkland. The Naree Budjong Djara National Park covers a large part of North Stradbroke Island and backs onto Point Lookout, offering bushwalking tracks, wildlife and access to some of the island's quieter beaches. Fishing, surfing, snorkelling and whale watching (from the headland lookouts in season) are the main recreational drawcards, and there's a real emphasis on outdoor, low-key pursuits over organised sport or entertainment precincts.

Housing & architecture

Housing stock is dominated by low-rise beach houses and holiday homes, many designed to make the most of ocean views and sea breezes rather than formal street presentation. With a median age of 55 among residents, a good portion of the housing base serves as permanent or semi-permanent homes for older owners as well as holiday accommodation, which shapes a market where character and location tend to outweigh scale or modern finish for many buyers.
