Northbridge is Perth's entertainment and cultural heart, built around William Street, James Street and the Cultural Centre precinct that takes in the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Library and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. It's a suburb that comes alive at night, with a dense concentration of bars, live music venues, late-night eateries and one of the city's most diverse dining scenes, from long-standing Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants to newer wine bars and rooftop venues.

By day it has a different rhythm, with cafes catering to the office workers who spill over from the CBD and students heading to nearby campuses. The mix of old and new, heritage pubs alongside laneway bars, gives Northbridge a character that's distinct from the rest of central Perth.

Shopping

Everyday shopping is easy, with independent grocers, Asian supermarkets and specialty food stores scattered through the William Street strip, plus the convenience of Perth's CBD retail precinct just a short walk away. The Perth Cultural Centre and adjoining Yagan Square area add a market-style feel on weekends, while Leederville and North Perth, both bordering suburbs, offer their own boutique shopping strips for residents happy to wander a little further.

Getting around

Few Perth suburbs are as well served by transport as Northbridge. Perth Underground and Perth train stations sit right on its southern edge, putting every Transperth line within walking distance, and the free CAT bus services loop through the suburb connecting it to the CBD, West Perth and Northbridge's own laneways. Its layout also makes it one of the most walkable and cyclable suburbs in Perth, with the CBD, Leederville and Highgate all reachable on foot in well under half an hour.

Housing & architecture

The current listings mix in Northbridge, 93% apartments and units against just 7% houses, tells the story of a suburb that has evolved into a high-density, inner-city living hub. Character-filled Federation-era terraces and cottages still line some of the quieter streets, but the bulk of new stock is apartments, ranging from older walk-up blocks to newer high-rise developments aimed at owner-occupiers and investors alike.

The property market

With a median unit and apartment price of $620,000, Northbridge remains one of the more accessible ways to buy property within walking distance of the Perth CBD. Given that apartments and units make up the vast majority of what's on the market, buyers are typically looking at inner-city living over a traditional house-and-land setup, which suits the suburb's younger demographic and its strong rental demand from students and professionals working in the city.

Parks & recreation

Green space is limited compared with the leafier neighbouring suburbs, but Russell Square and the surrounding Cultural Centre plaza give residents room to relax outdoors, and Hyde Park in nearby North Perth is a popular option for those wanting a proper green escape. The Swan River foreshore and Kings Park are also both within easy cycling or bus distance, giving Northbridge residents access to Perth's best outdoor spaces despite the suburb's own tightly built footprint.
