As the largest town for some distance in any direction, Lithgow functions as the retail and service centre for the wider region, drawing shoppers in from Marrangaroo, Bowenfels, Mckellars Park, Morts Estate and Doctors Gap. The main street and adjoining plazas cover supermarkets, everyday retail, banks and trade services, so most day-to-day needs are met locally without a trip over the range to Katoomba or down to Sydney.

Getting around

Lithgow is well served by both road and rail. The Great Western Highway runs straight through, connecting to the Blue Mountains and Sydney to the east and the Central West towns of Bathurst and Orange to the west via the Great Western Highway and Mid-Western Highway corridor. Lithgow railway station is the terminus of the Sydney Trains network on the Blue Mountains Line, giving locals a direct rail link into the city, while also connecting with NSW TrainLink regional services heading further west.

Within the town itself, distances are short and manageable, and neighbouring pockets like Bowenfels and Mckellars Park are only a few minutes from the centre by car, making local commuting straightforward.

Schools & families

Families have a solid spread of options in and around Lithgow. Primary-aged children can attend Lithgow Public School, Cooerwull Public School, Zig Zag Public School or the Catholic St Patrick's Primary, while La Salle Academy and Lithgow High School cover secondary schooling. Having this range of public and Catholic schooling within the one town is a drawcard for families weighing up the move from larger centres.

Lithgow's housing stock is dominated by standalone houses, which make up 69% of current listings, with land sales accounting for a further 24% – a reflection of the room the town still has to grow. History

Lithgow grew up around coal mining, the railway and heavy industry, including the former state ordnance and small arms factories that made it a strategically important town through much of the 20th century. That industrial backbone still shows in the town's architecture and street layout, and while the economy has diversified, the sense of Lithgow as a working town with a strong identity has never really faded.
