History

Encounter Bay takes its name from the historic 1802 encounter between British and French exploration ships led by Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin, a rare moment of peaceful meeting between rival colonial powers during the Napoleonic era. The area later became a base for whaling in the 1830s, one of South Australia's earliest European industries, before developing into the residential and holiday area it is today, with much of that maritime heritage still visible in local place names and the Bluff's whale-watching tradition.
