As the commercial centre of the Riverland, Berri has a more comprehensive retail offer than many towns its size, with a central shopping strip covering everyday needs, supermarkets, and a range of local specialty stores. For bigger shopping trips, residents can also look to nearby regional centres, but for day-to-day life Berri is largely self-sufficient.

Getting around

Berri is well placed as a road hub for the Riverland, with the Sturm Highway and other regional routes connecting it to neighbouring towns and to Adelaide, around two and a half hours away by car. Locally, the town is compact and easy to get around, with the neighbouring locality of Gurra Gurra close by across the river. There's no passenger rail in the region, so a car is the practical way to get around and to reach other Riverland towns.

Schools & families

Families in Berri are well served for schooling options. Berri Primary School and Our Lady of the River School cover the early years, while Berri Regional Secondary College provides secondary education for the town and surrounding district, meaning most families can complete their children's schooling without leaving the area.

Parks & recreation

The river is Berri's biggest recreational asset, with foreshore parks, boat ramps and picnic areas that get plenty of use throughout the warmer months. Beyond the water, the town has the usual complement of sporting ovals, courts and community facilities that reflect its role as a regional hub, supporting a full calendar of local sport and club activity.

Berri's property market reflects its status as an affordable regional centre, with a median house price of $360,000 and median rent of $420 a week. The market has been particularly strong recently, with house prices up 14.2% over the past year, a solid result for a town of this size and a sign of ongoing demand for Riverland real estate.

Current listings are dominated by houses, which make up 80% of the market, with land sales accounting for 16% and apartments, units and townhouses making up the remaining 4% combined. That mix points to a market built around standalone family homes and blocks rather than higher-density living, which suits Berri's character as a spread-out river town.
